Island Pašman

It has the area of 51.9 sq. kilo­meters. It is separated from Zadar by the Zadar Channel and from the island of Pašman by the narrow artificially long passage Ždrilac, across which a bridge has been built. It is one of the most inhabit­ed islands (with 7,518 inhabitants in seven settlements) on the east­ern Adriatic coast. The settlements are: Ugljan, Kukljica, Poljana, Preko, Kali, and Sutomišćica. Beside olive-trees and vineyards, people on the island raise also vegetables. Kali and Kukljica are distinctively fish­ermen settlements. On a few sites there are the remains of the Illyrian hillforts. In the antiquity the island was densely inhabited (the remains of the Roman buildings). All pre­sent settlements were founded in the Middle Ages.

The island in the Zadar archipelago with the area of 63.3 sq. kilometers. The highest point is Bokolj (274 m). The island has 3,350 inhabitants in eight settlements. The coast is steep and very indented in the west, with long, well sheltered coves. The settlements are Tkon, Kraj, Pašman, Mrljane, Neviđane, Ždrelac and Dobropoljana. The main occupations of the inhabitants are agriculture, cattle-farming and fishing.

It has been inhabited since pre­history. Preserved monuments from that time are Illyrian graves and remains of the hillforts, as well as the archaeological finds from the Roman period. Since 1050, the is­land belongs to the diocese of Biograd, and since 1126 it is owned by the archbishopric of Zadar.
The islands Ugljan and Pašman are connected to the mainland by the ferryboat lines: Biograd-on-sea - Tkon, and Zadar - Preko.

PAŠMAN
The settlement and port in the Pašman channel. Right in front of it is the small island of Babac. The parish church was built in the early Middle Ages. In Mali Pašman you can see the medieval church of St. Rok.

TKON
The place on the island that is opposite to Biograd-on-sea on the mainland. Tkon is located near the beautiful beach. The parish church is from the 18th century. After the Venice destroyed Biograd-on-the-sea in 1125, the Benedictines built a nastery there, that later became the center of the Glagolitic writing. It was deserted in the 19th century and the Gothic monastery church of SS. Kuzma and Damjan, built from 1367 to 1518, is still preserved.

KRAJ
The village with fertile olive groves and vineyards. There is also the Gothic Franciscan monastery with the church of St. Damjan from 1392.

NEVIĐANE
The picturesque settlement famous of the beautiful beach and archaeological remains from Illyrian and Roman period.

ŽDRELAC
Situated near the coast of the channel between the islands Ugljan and Pašman. In 1973, a 210 meters long bridge was built to connect these two islands. Because of the beautiful beaches and clean sea it is the famous resort for the citizens of Zadar.
