Island Lastovo

    There are several beautiful bays on the island, the Zaklopatica bay, an ideal place for a quiet holiday, far from the hustle, Velo and Malo Lago bays.  On the southern coast is a large and deep bay, which provides safe shelter during the bora and westerly winds. On the eastern side of the bay is the place called Skrivena Luka (Hidden harbor), with a low, sand coast. The other attractive places are Lastovo village, Lucica, Saint Mihovil, Ubli, Pasadur, Prehodisca, Saplun Island- famous for its beautiful sand beaches often full of yachts. There  are excursions by boat to the islands and islets of the Lastovo archipelago. On the west side of Lastovo lie the small islands of Mrcar and Prezba. There are two lagoons: Malo lago (Small Lake) and Velo lago (Big Lake), ideal for cover sail boats and yachts because they are both sheltered from the wind. In the middle of the larger lake is an islet with Benedictine monastery, which can be visited by boat, which runs 4 times a day.

About island Lastovo:

It is separated from Korčula by the Lastovo Channel. It has the area of 46.9 sq. kilometers and 46.4 kilo­meters long coastline. The highest point is Hum at the altitude of 417 meters. The island has 1,300 inhab­itants. Among numerous limestone hills there are Karst fields. There are a few caves, largest among which is Rača. The coast is rather steep, and on the south side of the island there is deep, large bay, safe anchorage sheltered from northern and western winds.

Skrivena luka (the Hidden Harbor) is located on the eastern bay with low, sandy coast. The western coast of the island of Lastovo and the eastern coast of the small island of Prižba close picturesque coves protected from bura (northern wind) called Veliko jezero and Malo jezero (the Big and Small Lake). The settle­ment Lastovo is located in the northern part of the island and is connected by the road with the set­tlement Ubli on the southwestern coast. The inhabitants work in agri­culture (vineyards, olive-groves, orchards, vegetable gardens) and fishing. West of the island of Lastovo is small, green, uninhabit­ed island of Kopiste with sand beaches in sheltered coves. Near the north-eastern coast of the island of Lastovo is located the archipelago of Lastovo - more than forty uninhabited islands, small islands and reefs. The island of Saplun is famous of its coves with sand beaches and lighthouses are on a few small islands. The sea around the small island of Mrčara is abundant with lobsters. The island of Lastovo was mentioned under the name of Ladesta in the times of Greek colonization of Adriatic. There are also remains of architec­ture of Roman and early medieval period in the cove Ubli. There is permanent ferryboat connection with the mainland: Split - Lastovo.

Places on the island Lastovo:

LASTOVO
Lastovo is the main settlement on the island. It lies 86 meters above the northern coast, on the edge of the arable field. The port of Lastovo is located in the small, shallow cove St. Michael from where road goes to Ubli. There is also bus connec­tion with Ubli. Above the town is the hill with meteorological station and beautiful view on the eastern part of the island, small islands of Lastovčići, and on the island of Korčula. At the beginning of the 11th century, Venetians settled there the inhabitants of the older settlement that they destroyed in 998. The oldest architectural mon­ument in the town is the Roma­nesque church of St. John in ruins. The parish church of SS. Kuzma and Damjan is from the 14th cen­tury. Inside the church you can see Pieta, the work of the unknown Venetian master from 1545. The loggia opposite to the church was built in the 15th century. At the entrance to the town is the church of St. Vlaho that was mentioned already in the 12th century. Not far from the town is also small Pre-Romanesque church of St. Luka from the 12th century. On the cemetery is small church of Our Lady in the Field from the 14th century.
In the town of Lastovo people preserved picturesque national cos­tume that they wear on the occa­sion of festivals and holidays.

UBLI
Ubli is illage, port and the main har­bor on the island of Lastovo. H lies on the south-west coast of the island in the cove Velo Jezero. The first tourist and catering establishments on the island of Lastovo were built along the road towards Malo jezero. On the cove Velo jezero, archaeolo­gists discovered the bases of the Old Croatian basilica from the 5th-6th century with sarcophagus. Beside basilica are the remains of farm buildings from the same period.
